The summer is coming to an end, but it has been a good one. I have done things that I did not think I could do, and succeeded where I had failed in the past. This summer started light with not much to do and a lot of sleeping in. After the long Junior year, this was a beautiful summer gift. As relaxing as it was, bore started to settle in not long after it had started. To remedy this activities were introduced into my schedule like Special Olympics which I really enjoyed. Friends were another wonderful part of this start to the summer, with myself and two good friends seeing the latest Star Wars movie. The highlight of the beginning of the summer was going up to my brother's house in Burlington, Vermont, for a week.
I loved my time with my brother spending a whole week at his place, becoming friends with his splendid roommates as well. We played many a video game there, even playing Smashed Brawl, a drinking game involving the Super Smash Bros games. I drank ketchup in water instead of alcohol, but even for my high tolerance for ketchup, it was a lot. We went bowling one night, and enjoyed some fun outings in the wilderness. This came ended too quickly and I was back home in Sudbury.
Being back home was nice though, and especially seeing my friends was a blast. I also started to post one blog piece per day, having successfully continued that to this date. I really want to keep up with this and feel very proud of my work so far. One thing that I had tried and failed to do last summer was to get a job. With it being already the end of July it seemed unlikely that places would only be hiring for the summer so I would need to find a job I would keep during the school year.
I sent out online applications to the close grocery stores hoping that I would get a quick reply. I was quickly distracted from this task by an actual job, having signed up to work a week in the summer for the buildings and ground staff at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. I worked from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM for five days, having a much more pleasant time than expected. I had friends signed up for that week which helped a lot but also the buildings and ground workers were incredibly nice. I ended up cleaning lockers, cars, and weeding for most of it but with friends this went by fairly quickly.
Back to the permanent work finding grind, I applied to Papa Gino's in Sudbury due to a sign that was spotted while driving. I applied one night and the next day in the mid-afternoon I heard my ringing phone and answered it. It was Papa Gino's who asked me if I could come in for an interview. I was both surprised at how fast they replied and anxious for my now scheduled interview. I looked up common interview questions online and practiced what I would say to prepare myself. In addition, I dressed up in one of my best outfits so that I could look professional for the interview. I left a bit early choosing to just drive for a while to calm myself down. Once I parked I was still fifteen minutes early and so sat in my car for ten minutes. At 3:25 I left my car to walk into the Papa Gino's five minutes early.
I told the cashier that I was a few minutes early for an interview and my name was Ian. The manager told me to sit down at a table and that he would be over shortly. Soon after he sat down and we both introduced ourselves to each other. Nothing surprising was asked in the interview and my interviewer was very pleasant and passionate. I felt good during the interview and at the end of it he offered me the job which I snapped up. He explained the work permit process to me, allowing me to quickly get a start on it.
This success was awesome to me having succeeded where I had failed in the past, but there was still something I was more excited for. My brother was coming home on Sunday the twelfth of August. Whenever I am with my brother we have an awesome time hanging out and I was so excited. I called my brother while he was driving home for around an hour just talking. This leads us to where we are now, me sitting here, finishing this post excited to play a video game called Crystal Chronicles with my brother after I publish this.
