My Decision: George Washington University

I have decided to attend George Washington University this coming fall semester. My previous piece ended with me stating there was an 85% chance for me to attend GWU, 14% BU, 1% other. My prediction for GWU over BU stemmed from the total costs and location of the schools. While complete costs stayed a large part of my decision, and I still really love that I get to experience a new place in DC, course flexibility became the final nail in my GWU choice.

When I applied to all my schools, I stated that I wanted to be a high school history teacher. Being a teacher still seems like a fun and interesting career, but as I have thought more about what I want to do, I have realized how much I want to experience. I really hope I get to be a teacher in my lifetime, but I also think it would be so cool to be a diplomat in a foreign country, or a lawyer nitpicking cases at home. At BU I was accepted into the CAS/Education double degree program. If I followed this program because of the stringent teacher certification requirements my ability to branch off into a lot of topics would be limited.

At GWU only sixty of my one-hundred-twenty minimum credits need to go to my major. I am pretty set and eager to study history as my major, and I love the DC area to do this with all of its museums and its unique place in American history. I get to study this thrilling broken puzzle at GWU while still having half of my courses be in other subjects. While there are required classes like a writing seminar, I have a lot of leeway in picking electives at GWU. These possible courses make my brain tingle. For example, international relations seems like a very exciting field, and I still love learning the beautiful language of math right now and would jump at the opportunity to continue my education there.

I cannot wait to learn. I love it. GWU gives me a wonderful chance to pursue so many things. Entering college is not all fun and games, and I have anxiety about entering a whole new world, but for each anxious twitch, there are two head nods of excitement.
